    beyond the house

Doris, age 16, in 1926, with her Aunt Mae, left. Hey, loyal followers — just wanted to post a link to my current project. Since my Great Aunt Doris passed away in March 2011, I inherited her journals, and have since been transcribing and compiling them for posterity. Fabulous funny stuff from a rebellious teenager in the Roaring 20s, spirited entries from a stubborn college girl in the Great Depression, and delicious posts from an independent young woman arriving in San Francisco on the eve of World War II. Love, laughter, cocktails and lovers — it’s all there. I may not be posting at the Muse for a while as…

    raising the roof

or, our fate is ceiled. More work at the Green House: look, we have a ceiling! And then they (our dear friends Arturo and G) covered up that beautiful insulation with Sheetrock, and it looks like this (below), except with tape and mud over the seams; the ceiling awaits some love from a paint roller. Thanks very much to the efforts of Arturo and Guillermo, we are almost ready for — wait for it — prime time (painting joke there). That’s on the inside of the house. On the outside, all is well. All our girls came up to visit and hang at the river last weekend, and here they are on the deck with Pa.…

    Modern Muse = Green Scene

We (Modern Muse) went live this week on Alameda Patch, a local online “newspaper” that is part of the much larger AOL-Huffington Post media family. Doesn’t family sound so cozy? It’s a business — what can I say? — to which I contribute mostly voluntarily, and occasionally on a paying basis. Mostly I just wanted to let ya know that I’m cross-posting and you’ll see the same posts on Alameda Patch as Green Scene, although I will also post on non-green stuff here as well. Clear as mud? Yeah! In the meantime, today I’m doing about 6 things at once. Some guys from the rental company came to fix the…

    chicka chicka boom boom!

The chickies are here! Meet Daisy, Poppy, Rosie, Violet and Bluebell, one of each of several different breeds of chickens that were waiting to come home with me from Penngrove Hay and Grain. They are happy in their little box-home and as soon as the rain stops, they will go outside and get a little bit of sunshine. We are set to get a premade chicken run from good neighbors Erin and Jack (bee- and chicken-keepers, awesome writers, good people). They also have a hen house for us but it may be too big to get here. We shall see. Sunday is the day. But here they are, and aren’t…

    Coolio

Barack is da bomb. How cool is he? Super cool. I couldn’t be happier. I’m sure not everyone feels this way. But as for me and my house, we will celebrate. I ate one of the persimmon muffins for breakfast. What did it taste like? Pumpkin, sort of. A fruity spice cake. It was good. It was fine. Yum. I’ve been bringing my lunch almost every day since the star of the new year. I was doing that before, but not on days we have trade-lunches at work. We used to have a trade for Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. We still have Tuesday and Thursday but I’m not eating…
